2 things - Hurricanes are a lot more scarce than I thought.

They're spread out with amazing evenness.

A couple of days ago I linked to an article by bogdaddy that told about how we used to build around the coast line in the south. Hurricanes have always been a fact of life but until forty or so years ago the beach areas were not high rise condos and multi-million dollar development the way they are now. As bogdaddy says, if you want to build in hurrican alley do it with your beer money. If it blows away then you have not lost much and it will be easy to replace.

I was in:

Bertha - 1996 - Cat 2
Fran - 1996 - Cat 3 (tree fell on our house in base housing)
Bonnie - 1998 - Cat 2
Hugo - 1989 - Cat 4 (flooded Augusta, GA, have videotape)

Then, we were in some Typhoons in Okinawa. All I remember was having a Typhoon party, going to my room to go to bed and there being about an inch of water in my bedroom. Good thing I did not know the type of potential disaster we were dealing with...I was six.

Continuing the 'I was there' theme:
I was in:

Betsy -'65 (my mom was pregnant with me and sent to the hospital in case of early delivery)

Frederic - '79 (saw cool green lightning in that one...also kept me from having my birthday party...bad storm!)

Chantal '89 - Piece of cake compared to Frederic

Danny '97 - watched Mobile Bay be sucked dry--cool!

Georges '97 - flood waters came up to our house...I was a single parent then, and my six year old son saw the water, and said "We're gonna die, we're gonna die...I'm too young to die!!!" I laugh at that memory now, although at the time I was in tears!

Ivan '04 - I say this name and spit!!

Arlene '05 - Piece of cake compared to Ivan

Cindy '05 - Piece of cake compared to Ivan

Dennis '05 - Piece of cake compared to Ivan

Katrina '05 - spit!!!

Hmm...maybe it's time to move from the Gulf Coast!!!!!!!

I love the Maine strikes. How many people in Maine do you think are prepared for hurricanes? Do you think we should send them some federal cash, just in case?
