C Isn't For Cookie

My 2nd son told me the other day that they have a way of remembering a math term DMSC.

DMSC?

He bragged, "Everyone else in class remembers it as Dumb Mice Smart Cats. I remember it as Dumb Maestros Sip Crap."

Lovely.

This is a boy thing, right?

Dumb Maestros Sip Crap?

So I said, "Buddy, what does DMSC stand for... other than that whole sipping crap thing?"

And he said, "oh. I don't know..."

I managed to narrow it down to Division, Mulitiplication, Subtraction and... C? Crap? Surely there is more than... Crap?

I spent way too much time trying to figure out another name for Addition. Finally my eldest said to me, "Mom, C stands for Compare. I find it confusing too..."

Well, that's all well and good, but what good does it do to remember that Dumb Maestros Sip Crap if you don't know what Crap really is?! Ack!

Constivision?

At least he didn't choose a phrase like "Drugged Morons Shoot Crank."

Hehe T1G!

They make math way too hard these days!

Bou,
I started out as a math major in college (and then wisely switched to Computer Science). I have never heard of DMSC. Is it just me or is Addition missing?

Compare? What kind of math are they teaching kids these days? They need to teach the three R's again. Even if two of the those R's actually begin with a "W" and an "A". That doesn't say much for spelling does it? Hmmm.

Compare? What the heck are they teaching these kids?! Why they might as well start talking about how one number is "bigger" or "greater" than another. Don't they care what that does to the "smaller" number's self-esteem. I think we need a more-inclusive branch of mathematics. Let's empower _all_ of the numbers equally. I'm tired of the labelling of some numbers as "negative"...a stigma which these numbers cannot seem to escape. Besides, it seems to me that most of those so-called "advances" in mathematics were made by a bunch of dead white men. I think it's high time we had a little more gender equality amongst the numbers.

[The preceding comment was sponsored by the number 12, which in case you haven't figured it out by now, double-majored in Sociology and Women's Studies at Bard College.]

Ahhhhh. Long division -- a rite of academic passage.

Jim- LONG DIVISION!!! That's it! I was thinking way way too deep. I'm thinking, "Polynomials and Algebra" trying to figure out where in the hell one compares. But you're right. It's long division!

Jerry- I'm an Applied Math major by degree. I never in my life had heard of DMSC. Good Grief.

Zonker- I'm LMAO! Holy crap.

T1G- I'm surprised that's not what he chose. Next year... in 4th grade... perhaps we'll be talking about drugged morons. You never know!

I always remembered it as My Dear Aunt Sally (multiply, divide, add, subtract). You put Please in front to cover "parentheses" - do the MDAS operations in those first, and work your way out. I guess these days you can make it My Dear Aunt Sam, to be kind of gender-neutral (or gender-bending, as one's preference dictates).

Um, I must have been asleep, or daydreaming, ah yes daydreaming, my favorite subject.
