Listening to the Beat

The last week or two I've been scouring for DCI. Championships were last weekend in Pasadena. They showed semi-finals around the US at various theaters that night, which happened to be date night for my husband and me.

I didn't think he'd truly understand my saying, "Uh, babe, instead of the Bourne Identity, how about we head out to Royal Palm Movies and watch the DCI semi-finals."

Phht. Right.

I was texting a buddy of mine the day before, as I have some old band tapes of ours that I am going to get converted to DVD. It's been on my mind, in particular knowing DCI finals were coming. He sent me a text back saying, 'I'll call you when I get home... I'm in Pasadena" to which I replied, "DCI finals are there this weekend" and to which the response was, 'I know! I'm going to semi-finals!"

Jerk.

And then to find out that Sticks son is in a Division II corps?! I was so stoked for him. What an experience. Kids who go DCI really have their act together. They work incredibly hard and know their instruments.

Blue Devils won this DCI. They are one of my faves. I do love Phantom, but the Blue Devils... they do rock. I've been on youtube tonight looking at the various drum lines.

Here's the Blue Devils from 2001. Their drumline is tight and clean. One drum. One sound. Amazing kids.

Hon, why didn't you tell me? I was watching them practice for a week! We lived about halfway between two of the schools hosting teams! We were going to go, except that we went to the beach!

I am such a band geek....

DCI kids are awesome. Every single one of them work their butt off. I am proud that he is not afraid of hard work and commitment. He loved the finals. I wish I could have worked it out to go but someone has to work to pay for it.

My daughter marched w/the Sacramento Freelancers 10 years ago. She had an awesome summer.

CTG- I'd have loved every minute of that!

Sticks- I hope when I introduce my kids to DCI they'll do it. You know our band. We marched slightly larger than DCI Divison I. We had guys from Madision and PR come help our drumline and colorguard. We practiced constantly... 3-4 hours a day every day, and they are still my best friends. There isn't a band like that down here. The only way my boys will get it will be DCI and DCI is so much bigger than what I did.

Sailynn- I remember the Freelancers! What a wonderful commitment. Its expensive, but the kids get so much out of it.

Fabulous!

Many years ago, the finals were in Jersey. My late brother-in-law asked me to go with him. I humored him, as the whole drum/bugle thing sounded like a real snoozer.

IT KNOCKED ME OUT! When the entire corps faces the audience and plays fortissimo, your brains fall out.

I recall that the Blue Devils were there and another great outfit called the Racine Kilties.

Then, of course, there is New Jersey's Hawthorne Caballeros.

Great stuff, that.
