Educating Bubba

The Governor of our state declared some sort of day for all our kids, where they were to wear the colors of their favorite college to school today. It was to promote higher education. I think the idea was not a bad one, but evidently I am the only one who saw it becoming a clothing war of Florida vs. FSU, with a smattering of University of Miami thrown in.

I told the boys at dinner last night, this theory of mine. Being a Catholic school, my eldest chimed in, “You’re right Mom, but don’t forget, there will be A LOT of Notre Dame and Matt is wearing Ohio State because his Dad went there.”

Mr. T: And the Callahan boys will be wearing LSU and UT colors, because their Mom and Dad went to those schools.

That is pretty important… this alma mater stuff, which was proving my point even more that the school would be full of FSU, UF, and UM colors.

With a smattering of Notre Dame.

And some good old fashioned SEC thrown in for good measure.

This wasn’t a day for higher education. This was becoming a day of football… ‘my team kicked your team’s ass last year and THIS is the team *WE* root for in our family during football season’.

And so I continued at dinner, “Boys, I think we should buck the trend. I know you’re all wanting to wear your Dad’s alma mater’s colors (UF), but I think you should be different from ALL THE OTHER kids and wear… MIT.”

Boys: *blink*

Me: I’m serious. MIT. Nobody else will and it’s a cool school and definitely promotes higher education.

Boys: *blink*

Me: And?

Boys: Ummm… what are their colors?

Me: A burgundy.

Husband: Orange.

Me: It’s NOT Orange.

Ringo: Purple. It is purple.

Me: NO! It’s burgundy. Fine, I’ll text Morrigan. She’ll look for us on-line. (We went out to dinner.)

I got a text back from Mo that it was in fact Crimson and White and a little note to tell my ever lovin’ husband that orange was Syracuse.

Me: Crimson, boys. I know we have Crimson shirts…Come on. MIT! MIT! MIT!

They wore Gator colors. And all their friends? Gator, Seminole and Hurricane, with a smattering of Fighting Irish and some SEC thrown in for good measure.

Just as I frickin’ predicted.

NOT ONE MIT. Not one. I was so disappointed…

Actually, MIT's colors are Purple and Green. Kind of a winy burgundy purple, but purple none the less. For Chemistry, and Green for natural sciences.

Your hubby was close. Caltech is Orange. Orange, blue, and white.

I don't know Noam Chomsky. I suspect that is not a good thing...

Shouldn't someone have worn blue and white??? Geeze... Where was the shout of "Go Snails!!!"?

VW- You know, they asked me if I was hurt they'd not wear my colors. I said, "You can yell, Go! Go! Escargot!", but they weren't big on it. Can you believe it?! ;-)

I was watching part of the Syracuse/Tulsa game the other night... Syracuse is definitely ORANGE... BIG BRIGHT ORANGE. Holy Crap it made my eyes hurt!

You're right though... because school colors are meant to promote sports. That's why it's nearly impossible to figure out the "colors" of schools that aren't sports schools - what do they need colors for?

I guess the idea is to get the kids interested in college, no matter how you have to do it. Education is the dull part - no one pushes that. *grin*

Moam Chomsky - An anti-American linguistics professor who teaches at MIT. That's all you need to know, except he's also a world class hypocrite. BTW Bou, where did you go to school?

Heh. I guess I've never blogged that.

I went to a little school in the panhandle called The University of West Florida. I consider it one of Florida's best kept secrets. Beautiful frickin' campus, wonderful faculty, small class sizes. Its where I met VW, we went to school together.

Our logo is a Nautilus shell, which you can see in the upper left corner of this link, that's why VW and I were joking about "Go Snails!" and "Go! Go! EscarGOt!" We are not a heavy sports school.

Our colors are teal and green.

Those baseball shirts looked blue and white to me. ;-) Bad enough to be snails ( or Escargots) but I can't add 'teal and green' to it!!! hahaha... I'm sure your boys loved that response!
