Folks, I am so not happy that I am #9 in Google for "Do People Eat Afterbirth".

That is just a huge ick factor.

Holy crap. I think I'm going to vomit...

I must've missed that post, or don't remember it. I'm not sure if they still eat them, but some groups/tribes were still doing what some other animals do. I read it was kinda like chewing on bubble gum.

TN- Ok, first, i never posted on that. I was posting on hamsters and for some reason when someone googled that, my post came up. Gah!

Second, I so did not need to hear that. I can feel the frickin' bile rising in my throat. Yuck.

Cows do it. It is gross to watch.

Peggy's right that cows do it. Most wild mammals will. It's a way of protecting the newly born young from predators, since it removes a smelly and blood filled attractor.
There may also be nutritional need of the new mother that are filled by consuming a protein rich meal so soon after giving birth.
Gross?? Not so much. Dogs will eat their own shit if you let them. That's gross

Now you will get googled for it even more!

I just want you to know that I just threw up in my mouth right now.

Peggy and Kdzu- I knew that animals did it. I've read about it... never watched. But the thought of humans doing it is just... revolting and the thought someone would be googling for that? Ick.

Oddy- I thought this might be the case when I put it up. But, it was just so nasty, I had to.

Ogre- Me too. Again. Every time I think about it. Blech.

of course people eat after birth, how else would they grow nice and strong.

Oh yuck - and I saw a special on TV once (The Learning Channel maybe??) where a couple prepared it and served it to all of their friends as an hors d'oeuvre. ACK! It's just beyond me!

Mmmmm...yummy. It probably tastes like salty watermelon chunks, using a base of Campbell's Tomato Soup.

I had two thoughts on this. The first being that I never heard of people eating afterbirth, but I do know people that turned it into a shampoo.

Secondly, I wonder what it tastes like.

Raw? Feh. But sautéed with shallots, butter, and a bit of chervil?

Yeeeeuckkkk! Backtrack to that food ranking system your boys had, Bou. Where does placenta fall? Above or below Bunny Grahams? Above or below crap?

Posted by: Peggy U at September 27, 2007 10:35 PM

Eating afterbirth is supposed to help with postpartum depression, and to help speed up the onset of maternal instincts.

I don't know about all that, but it does taste like calf liver. Chewy calf liver. Serve with eggs... mmmmmmmmm.

BTW... Congrats!!! Your post that earned you the number nine mention has dropped down... replaced by this post, which earns you SECOND PLACE!!! Yay!!!!
