Mini-Vacations and Follow The Bouncing Ball

I am gone for the weekend, folks. Mini-vacation.

Play nice.

But first... I want you to click the link and then hit the play button and don't cheat.

This is a great lesson in focusing... see if you can make an accurate count.... watch this video and learn a great lesson about your eyes and brain.... :)
Watch the entire video counting the basketballs. Don't cheat. By cheating I mean going to the extended entry or the comments.

AFTER you've watched the vid, click on the extended entry and then click the comments as people are going to comment.

Yes. Answer my Extended Entry.

I counted. I got 18. Then I thought maybe two of them didn't count as I wasn't sure if the folks in black had actually handed off.

But this was my thought process, "Counting, Counting, I'm counting... WTF is that? Another black person. counting counting. It's a f***ing ape. counting counting. What's he doing? counting counting..."

So I watch and they say that some don't see the ape and I thought, "That's dumb. It was big as day. He was a huge distraction... waving to us. How do you miss that big F***ing ape? Hmmm... how many balls bounced? They never told us?"

I emailed TGOO the following:

I got 18, but questioned two and thought 16. He didnít tell the answer.
Yes, I saw the ape. Who in the hell couldnít? Good God.

His answer?

I didn't see the ape. */;-) But I counted 17 1/2 passes. The last one was in the air when the time ran out.

WTF? So I called him and talked to Mom and she assured me he kept saying he didn't see that big black ape. She passed the phone to him and I said, "YOU.ARE.KIDDING! Right? It's a joke?"

And sure enough, not only did he NOT see the ape, but neither did the Naval Aviator friend that sent it to him.

So I want to know? Did you or did you not?

To him, it was just another black person. To me, it was a big distraction.

Yes or no?

And if you cheated, too bad... now you'll definitely see it and will never know your true answer.

Ciao. Play nice, y'all. The House of Boudicca is officially on... vacation.

Got 17 passes and never saw the ape. LOL

So far Ringo saw it... I need to see if Mr. T does. i can't get Bones to sit still enough to watch...

Posted by: Bou at June 12, 2008 05:56 PM

I got 17 1/2 like your dad. And I noticed an extra person in a black shirt, but did not really look... so I "kinda" saw the ape...

And what I would like to know is if there would be a difference if watching "live". Because I think in that case you know that the outcome might change. But since it was an event that was complete, you know there is a "right" answer to the question, and you block out anything that does not contribute.

Ok, I am just rationalizing... Fun stuff!

17 and no ape

Posted by: Sissy at June 12, 2008 09:08 PM

Okay- I got to 24 passes with two basketballs before a man in a gorilla suit distracted me. I think that was the point, though....I also don't think it helped that I did this without sound....Girlie took the speakers off my machine and has not put them back yet.

17 passes and No Ape.

17 passes and did not see the ape. And I can understand the naval aviator and TGOO (who I know was also a pilot). As a pilot myself I know you have to be in a real zone when landing an airplane. We concentrated on the passes and that was all we concentrated on.

16 (questioned 2 of the passes) and did not 'see' the ape. A person in a black added to the court but did not see it was an ape.

17, and no ape. Yoe said that Ringo saw the ape, did he get the correct number of passes?

Posted by: web at June 13, 2008 06:29 AM

15, and I saw the ape, probably why I only saw 15.

Posted by: Holder at June 13, 2008 06:39 AM

I got 16 passes and one tip, and I while I saw the extra come into the picture, I didn't realize it was an ape until he got into the middle of the group and did his thing... probably would have missed it if he just kept walking.

I've seen this in the past and never saw the ape until I watched it again and was looking for the ape.

16 and never saw the ape.

But in a real life setting, who would you rather have behind the wheel of a car, focused or non-focused? I may not see the on-coming tornado, but I won't rear-end anyone.

17 passes, and did not see the ape...then I sat there and wondered how in the world I'd managed to miss it! My focus was on the ball being passed between the whites and nothing else...

Posted by: Rachel at June 13, 2008 09:31 AM

Thanks for that, Jerry.

I'll be thinking about that when I hitch a ride with you, in a couple of weeks...

I saw a variation of this a couple of months ago. And yet, I STILL got suckered by it. 16 passes and no ape. Doesn't surprise me, thought. I have a bad habit of focusing intently on one thing to the exclusion of just about everything else going on.

Three apes, two turntables and a microphone. And 17 passes. Strange video.

Posted by: Toluca Nole at June 13, 2008 02:59 PM

I think it was filmed at a destination a little up the road...

Posted by: That 1 Guy at June 13, 2008 03:51 PM

18 passes - I counted the last 1/2 pass as a pass... and, I did NOT see the ape!

Posted by: Pop C at June 13, 2008 04:15 PM

I had my 10 year old watch it and he said,

"I don't know, I lost count when I saw some monkey come through..."

Posted by: P'cola Titan at June 13, 2008 06:45 PM

I counted 35 passes and I saw (but paid little attention to) the guy in the ape suit.

Now, what's the answer? And what's the question?

Posted by: Elisson at June 13, 2008 08:56 PM

never saw the ape.
