They Can Kiss My Sinning...

In our local paper today was an article on a 'sin tax'. This would be a tax upon foods that have been deemed... bad for you.

Talk about frickin' Nanny State. I cannot believe Americans are OK with this.

Really.

Where in the hell is our country going? Where? Where in the hell is personal responsibility? Why does everyone feel they have to govern everyone else's bad choices?

There is so much wrong with this, I cannot even see straight. And to read the article, I wanted to scream as the article continued to cite people who were so for this, thought this was such a grand idea, that I was left wondering if they had "Nanny" written on the frickin' resume.

Let's get some things straight here. I'm an endurance athlete. I eat healthy. This is what I eat just about every day:

Breakfast: 1 egg with a piece of 12 grain toast (no butter) and a big glass of water. SOMETIMES I live on the edge and have cheerios with skim milk, but I don't stay full as long.

Two to three times a week, I have ONE cup of coffee with nondairy creamer and I don't finish the cup.

10AM (IF I'm hungry): 1 small banana and peanut butter or a piece of fruit. Sometimes I live on the edge and eat 1 small banana with a handful of chocolate chips. And a glass of water.

I drink water all day.

Lunch: 1/2 sandwich of lean turkey breast with mustard (read: no mayo or cheese) on 12 grain bread and about 15 sunchips and a piece of fruit. SOMETIMES I have a salad with a slice of pita bread or a bowl of homemade vegetable soup with a slice of pita bread.

Snack at home: A piece of chocolate or a couple cookies or some popcorn. Sometimes hummus with crackers or cheese and crackers.

Dinner: Something made with chicken and the portions are very controlled. Vegetables.

SOMETIMES if I live on the edge, I eat a bowl of ice cream.

That's it. And I run/walk 3-4 times a week and after my Saturday run, which is never less than 5 miles, but can be as much as 13 miles, I am known to have a bagel with cream cheese and 1/4 of a muffin.

You'd think I would be scary thin, but I'm not. I lean a bit more on the carbs and not as heavy on the veges as I should. But it is what it is and overall, I eat pretty well.

So.

They want to tax me more when I decide to live on the edge and buy doughnuts (once a month) or a muffin (Saturdays) or chocolate (every day... I do have chocolate).

My resting heart rate is 65. My BP is 90/60. I'm in my BMI. And I love ice cream and chocolate and I'm going to get punished because some f***ing self righteous Nanny can't mind their own f***ing business.

Right.

Do they REALLY think that this is the problem? Do they REALLY think it is JUST the quality of the food we eat? REALLY?

Because... when was the last time any of the Nannies went out to eat? Last I looked, the portions in our restaurants were disgusting. I hear it is not so bad in Europe, but when we eat out, I'm lucky if I finish HALF of my meal and then I have the rest thrown out.

No doggy bag? NO. Chances are, if I'm eating out, it's not the best food for me and I don't eat like that at home.

It's not my fault I'm wasting food. It is the RESTAURANT'S for making the portions so damn big. Really.

But the Nannies aren't going there are they? They do not even want to TOUCH on portion control.

And what is their delineation of a good food vs. a bad food? White bread is not good for you. We all need to be eating Whole Wheat. So are we going to tax everyone eating Wonderbread?

What about sugar coated cereals? Or Eggo Waffles? I mean, those are not good breakfasts. Shouldn't we all be eating oatmeal or eggs? Are we going to tax any breakfast food that has processed sugar in it?

What about pizza? Pizza really... not so good. Lots of white bread (read not so good carbs) and cheese... if you talked to a dietician and you asked them about pizza they'd frown and say, "OK... limit it to not very often and to one piece." One piece. How many people eat one piece? Really?

Sub sandwiches... all that white bread. French fries. Fried carbs... both of them, really tough for a body to process. Hamburgers? Oooooo... anyone who thinks a good old fashioned greasy hamburger on a big old white bun is good for you, is rockin' on the wrong side of the nutritional highway.

Where does it stop?

My father in law is 5'5 (and shrinking) and weighs 215 pounds. In his day, he was 5'6 and weighed 260. He was as big around as he was tall.

Big man.

Big.

He hates chocolate, never eats ice cream, rarely eats dessert, never eats potato chips.

But hand that man a pizza and he'll eat half or more. Easy. Ask him what he wants for lunch and he wants a chicken parmesan sub... foot long please and it's best if that chicken has been fried and he'll have fries with that.

Dinner? Helping after helping there is no end.

Yet, in theory, according to the Nannies, he will pay not a penny more for how he eats, even though he has always eaten what three adults would eat.

Yet, here I am, very fit, eating well every day, but 'sinning' every day as well, and yet *I* am going to get penalized.

Screw them.

I am so sick of the lack of personal responsibility in this country it makes the bile rise in my throat. I am so sick of the Nannies telling me what is best for me and for my family it can throw me into a rage.

Don't even get me started on the fashion industry and what they've done to women to make them feel better about themselves. They have actually put smaller sizes on bigger clothes... so women don't feel so fat.

"OH look, I'm still in a size SIX!!! Whoo hooo!" Think again... you're in a 10. Someone lied to you... and you happily paid them to lie to you.

The whole thing pisses me off.

Sin Tax.

So when are the thugs going to start showing up on our doorsteps and weighing us to make sure we are living the lifestyle they deem is appropriate for us?

Huh?

When?

Meanwhile, if I have to read or overhear one more thing regarding the virtues of one Ted Kennedy, I might have to barf. The man was a complete frickin' loser.

LOOOOOOOSER.

What is happening to my Country?

Wow, angry today Bou! :P

Understandably though, a tax on "unhealthy" foods doesn't really seem fair for those of us who eat them in moderation ...

Posted by: Amanda at August 26, 2009 09:47 PM

Yeah, it's been stewing all day. I read it over breakfast this morning and thought, "You MUST be kidding me." What a bunch of dorks.

Just add to the whole, "Oh, Ted Kennedy... we will miss him so! He was such a wonderful senator..." and it makes my head spin.

I said to my Tech Lead today, "I wonder what Mary Jo has to say to ol' Teddy today. OH wait! She still won't say anything... because he's rotting in hell! Bwahahahaha"

Posted by: Bou at August 26, 2009 09:56 PM

I need to send you the link to the petition. I've been screaming about this since they first started talking about it.

And not just because it will KILL my industry. They would tax most shelf stable juices, twister, not to mention soda. Oh, and snacks.

I want them out of my job, my kitchen, my grocery cart....and most especially out of my damned wallet!!!!!

Posted by: Tammi at August 26, 2009 10:31 PM

I'm with you on all this. Especially the Kennedy part. If I have to read one more person who says he has atoned for letting that poor girl die and lonely and terrifying death ... I shall well and truly puke.

Posted by: Kris, in New England at August 26, 2009 10:32 PM

I'm a huge fatass and **I** can barely finish some of the damn full meal portions in restaurants.

Another problem is: when the hell did "appetizers" become as big as the meals used to be, and as expensive?

Posted by: Graumagus at August 27, 2009 01:50 AM

"Do they REALLY think it is JUST the quality of the food we eat? REALLY?"

No. Honestly they don't. Not for one minute. These are politicians. Their goal in life is to take more money and spend it. They just have to find lies they can tell people because it wouldn't sound good to say, "Hey, you working scum, I need more cash, so I'm raising your taxes so I can buy another jet."

They honestly don't care one bit about your health or anything else other than money, but they also know that there's too many emotional people who will be glad to give them even more money when the politicians claim, "Its for the children!"

Posted by: Eric at August 27, 2009 07:20 AM

Well, now you have proof that the US has caught terminal Socialism. These interfering "nannies" can't help themselves, they first of all twist morality into a reflection of their own prejudices and then start to railroad everyone using the law and their twisted ideology, always punting it as "morality" or "our moral duty". Watch this space, you'll next find that "Life" sentences don't mean "life" and the Death Penalty you have will soon be aboluished because "it is immoral".

Congratulations, there is no cure save the descent into totalitarianism and finally a revolution. Problem is this scum are very good at hiding in the woodwork and reinventing themselves to reappaear when you least expect it.

"So when are the thugs going to start showing up on our doorsteps and weighing us to make sure we are living the lifestyle they deem is appropriate for us?"

They already do this is either China or Japan. You have to weigh in every half year and if you are overweight you have so long till lose the weight again or you are penalized.

Next on the agenda? Taxing everyone who doesn't exercise.

Posted by: Quality Weenie at August 27, 2009 08:16 AM

Bou - I am so with you on this rant. Seriously - I have no idea what's going to happen next but am surely pissed off thus far...

And I am running away from the TV today - one more "beloved Ted Kennedy" comment might just tip me over the edge completely. Yeesh...

Posted by: Richmond at August 27, 2009 08:32 AM

Ogre's right.

And it's not just health care 'reform' that is turning Americans into the streets by the thousands to protest. It's the sin tax, the creeping socialism. It's suffocating!

Posted by: Pam at August 27, 2009 08:44 AM

As others have noted, this is already going on. We already tax you extra if you smoke or drink. There's talk of charging more for insurance depending on if you have a healthy lifestyle. I've heard of proposed extra taxes or higher gas prices for owners of SUVs. And of course, it's a crime to be rich, so we tax them higher than the rest of us, rather than splitting the tax bill equally, giving some of the highest users of govt. services a free ride.

The politicians know we won't object, because they've framed it so we can look down on the folks paying the extra taxes. Sadly, it sounds like they're getting away with it.

Posted by: George P. at August 27, 2009 08:54 AM

Bou, not to mention how much my appetite increases as the mileage increases. In a few weeks, I'll be consuming huge portions of food because I'll be running much longer distances. Not because I'm a huge fat ass (although I am), but because I'm burning through more and more calories.

Makes my head spin.

Posted by: wRitErsbLock at August 27, 2009 09:43 AM

When did this start? When the government started passing laws dictating things like seat belts in cars. Really. It's basically legislating behavior that hurts no one but you. (I wear my seat belt religiously I have no issue with wearing it because I know if I leave it off that will be the day the car rolls...).

Nope, once you start these niggling little things to legislate behavior to ostensibly make people "safer", it only escalates (there's cash in them thar regulations - lots of cash - lots of pretty money - not to mention power). Slowly, but surely. It's the slippery slope thing - the one that the do-gooders scorn as paranoia in those who disagree with them.

Begin the political thinking:
After all - the seat belt thing worked didn't it - saved lots of lives. It's a no brainer and so easy to promote because "safety first"! Who could possibly argue with that! If you do you must want to promote death and dismemberment to unsuspecting people! (hell you may even be racist!)

And lets not forget it brings in tons of extra revenue for police departments too. So if we now start taking extra money for things like... smoking or drinking alcohol - well who could blame us. If we make it more expensive, they'll consume less and we'll "save lives". From there it moves to food etc etc etc.
End the political thinking.

Eventually they want to control every facet of our lives. If you don't believe it - over in Britain (who generally runs just a bit ahead of us in this department) they are trying to get monitoring cameras put into homes of "dysfunctional families". That way the government can watch and be sure they eat right, don't take illegal drugs, the kids do their homework and get to bed on time...

I'm telling you - it's one step at a time. They'll charge us for each one and tell us it's in our best interests and for "the chirren". And we should be HAPPY they are so concerned. If we disagree we must be sadistic brutes to want to pronounce such suffering on others.

BAH!

Makes me sick.

Posted by: Teresa at August 27, 2009 09:52 AM

The biggest problem is, nobody's doing anything about it. I have yet to see a single politician or elected official stand up and address the creeping nanny state and how it's strangling our freedoms. How our laws need to promote personal responsibility, not regulate every facet of our lives. Nothing's going to change until we can move these discussions from our blogs to the major media outlets, and from there make them a part of every congressional election, every governor's election, every presidential election. We need to get our elected officials to pick up this cause if there's any hope of change.

After reading the comments and your post I have nothing to add other than to nod in agreement.

On Kennedy, though... I saw all the RIP going around on how he will be missed. My RIP was more like this:

RIP Senator Kennedy. Though it may be difficult where you're going... I hear it's hot there.

I'm so pissed I'm going to go eat the last brownie in the kitchen.

Posted by: PeggyU at August 27, 2009 01:26 PM

Wait...in SLEEPER, they said chocolate and cigarettes were good for you.

Posted by: Toluca Nole at August 27, 2009 04:06 PM

TN you bring up a good point. I don't recall seeing the film. But I do know it is reported that dark chocolate and red wine are good for you. Does this mean a tax break is coming or should I just wait for the stimulus package to stock up?

Posted by: mom at August 27, 2009 04:58 PM

TN- I loved that movie! Remember the big chicken?

Mom- OK, that's just funny. Maybe they'll hand the out at the health care clinics we'll be visiting with the new plan.

The "Barf Police" are just around the corner and they have yer number...

Once upon a time, what happened in America used to happen over here shortly after. Now it seems to be the other way round!

We have had this "Nanny" state for a few years.

We have more "CCTV" per capita than any other country in the world.

We are told what we should eat, how much alcohol we should consume..etc.

Whatever you do, don't forget your "5 a day".

Don't drink more than the recommended "Units of Alcohol".

Do this, Don't do that....etc.

May as well just hibernate!!!

Posted by: bx19 at August 28, 2009 03:06 PM

@bx19

Last I heard too much sleep was bad for you, shouldn't sleep more than 5 hours a night.

And these Americans think they've got it bad LOL.

I gave up listening to all these health warnings when I heard that if you drank water at Southend it caused cancer because it was extracted from the Thames and had already been drunk at least 6 times.

Posted by: DaveH at August 28, 2009 04:02 PM

Not sure how it works over your side of the pond, but it's not just the 'FOOD POLICE' you have to watch out for. I, at my work place, am not allowed to change a light bulb - because it is against our Health and Safety laws. I was asked to sign a 'CoSHH' (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)- statement, to use WASHING UP LIQUID for God's sake, I've been married 20 years.... I know it stings if it gets in my eyes.... I know to wash it out with 'copious amounts of clean water'.

Nanny State? they haven't started yet.

Posted by: DaveH at August 28, 2009 04:16 PM

A very enjoyable post...you need to get angry more often.

Posted by: thud at August 28, 2009 06:14 PM

Go getcha a copy of Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma and read it.

You'll see that government policies that date back to the Nixon Administration have created a Corn 'n' Soybean Monster in this country. It's why every damn thing we eat has high fructose corn syrup in it.

And as if that's not bad enough, now people are talking about Food-Nannyism? Time to shoot all the politicians, if this happens... or move to Antarctica.

You are exactly right: What ever happened to individual responsibility in this country? What ever happened to our ability to make our own choices, stupid as they may be?

I guess the thought process is, as more and more public money is expended on health care, the Guvvamint will want more and more influence over the things it perceives as influencing our health. Which takes away more and more of our choices.

But they will take my chocolate away only when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers...

Quote:"...What is happening to my Country?"

Simple. We stopped treating Commies as THE ENEMY and as a threat to our way of life. We stood by while they took over damn near every bit of mass-media, our schools from K through PhD, and so on, and so on...

We stood by while our rights were slowly stripped, and our taxes raised until our wives now have to work - thus leaving our children to be raised in the commie-indoctrination centers.

We stood by while the Federal government shredded the Constitution.

We stood by while the welfare-classes - who all have hair extensions, cell phones and french manicures - bred on into their 3rd and 4th generation - still with no job.

We allowed the looters to outnumber the producers - and now the Commies are in charge. The coup is almost complete.

Almost.

For they have now awakened a sleeping giant. The "silent majority" is silent no more.

They will continue with their agenda despite our wrath - for they feel no limits upon their power.

I pray we - in and on - the Right will resist, up to and including our G*d-given right to disband our failed Government and re-institute the one we were given - IF that's what it takes.

That's not up to us - it's up to our enemies.

They're in control.

The coup is almost complete.
