Love Fest 2009, Must I Watch it Anymore?

I was at work today, head in the computer, in a bit of a fog when I heard the words "Obama" and "Nobel Peace Prize" in the same sentence.

I swung around to the girl I job share my job with, a friend of mine for over 20 years and I said, "WHAT?"

She looked at me with a smirk and said, "Yup. Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize."

Now here's the thing, I had been hearing rumblings about it all morning, but I never actually heard THE NAME. I had NO CLUE who anyone was talking about.

On the radio station I flipped to, just in time to hear, "... and he received this year's Nobel Peace Prize..." missed it again.

So now I'm hearing the name and I was flipping out at the absolute absurdity of it. I mean, it was frickin' UNREAL when Al Gore won it for promoting Green. He beat out Irena Sendler... who is probably sitting damn close to if not right beside Mother Teresa right now.

Holy crap.

So this is the deal. We all know now the award is a complete joke. We suspected it was, but now... it's been validated.

Here's my question, who in the hell nominated the dork? We won't know for 50 years, which unfortunately puts me at 94 years old, which is NOT going to happen since I'll be lucky to make it to 80, so I'll never know, but my kids will.

Wouldn't it be a riot if we find out in 50 years that some Republican did it as a joke to show how Europe is in such a Love Fest with Obama, a man who has done NOTHING with his life but campaign or community organize, that they are willing to give him an award they gave the likes of Elie Wiesel and Mother Teresa?

I guess I'll never know. And I have a strong feeling, in 50 years, it will come to show the man may do some good things, but nothing that will warrant his award today.

Until then, I consider the Nobel Peace Prize along the same lines as the Prize one would acquire from a Cracker Jack Box.

Except I'd prefer to have the Cracker Jack Box instead please. I like my awards with more substance...

Well, yeah, and at least you get something to eat out of it!

Aw, that prize has been completely meaningless since they awarded it to Yasir Arafat and Jimmeh Carter. They'd probably give it to Pol Pot, too, if he were still around.

He got it for the “USA – Apology Tour” right after the inauguration.... yeah, thats it. >.

I suspect Peedee is right. Bush and Co. bragged for years that they don't care what others think about them. Obama shows up and apparently DOES care, so he gets lots of good press and a pretty award. And the conservatives are bleeding jealousy. It's just an award. If nothing else, some charity will net a nice $1.4 million donation out of it all.

If it was JUST an award, it wouldn't make the front page of the paper every time it's awarded.

The sadest thing about this is that nominations for the prize were due Feb 10th, which means Obama was president 20 days when we was nominated.

So what could he have done or even promised in 20 days that would merit a Nobel Peace prize?

The scary part of this to me is that I can see awarding the prize to him in order to promote the parts of his agenda they like -- the weakening of the US -- and to effectively stop any plans to show a spine that might have been in the works regarding new and coming threats. After all, wouldn't it be inconceivable that a Peace Prize winner would bomb a rogue country's weapons facilities? They think they have gelded him with a shiny piece of metal and a bit of cash. I sincerely hope not.

Does Massengill give awards? Because I think he's qualified for that one.

This is the one we have been waiting for. Finally after waiting for 2000 years it has come. A little late, but now it's here. The first Hawaiian President born in the manger has been finally recognized. At last, at last..!!I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight! Halleluyah.

What Elisson said... I haven't been able to take them seriously since the time of Arafat and Carter. That the media makes such a fuss - well of course they do - all the people they fawn over manage (somehow) to get these awards. That makes them feel all warm and fuzzy. So they try to make us believe that this means something.

In fact it means nothing at all and like the Academy Awards it's an incestuous bunch of people preening each other's feathers and shouting how wonderful they all are. Um... sure... whatever. Heh.
