For those keeping up with Hoops this month, I've been filling in my brackets. It's the only time I follow Bball.
First, what in the heck is a Gonzaga? Am I the ONLY person who has never heard of this school?
I'm rooting for Cornell against Kentucky. Wouldn't that be cool to see them take it all the way?
I think the Duke Purdue game is going to be a rumble.
I'm rooting for Xavier because I like the name.
I think I'd like to see St. Mary's take Baylor, although I do think St. Mary's sounds like an all girls Prep school. Do they wear plaid jumpers when they play?
That's all for my expert commentary on basketball. I know. I should work for Fox Sports...
Posted by Boudicca at March 21, 2010 09:38 PMIf you don't know Gonzaga, you haven't watched college basketball in years. St. Mary's = Gaels. That's enough reason to pull for them.
Posted by: Toluca Nole at March 21, 2010 11:35 PMMy uncle graduated from Gonzaga (way back when!) Barats and Bereta are from Gonzaga.
Posted by: PeggyU at March 22, 2010 12:38 AMIt's actually been a few years since I've done the brackets. I wondered if Gonzaga had come up more recently. But some of the schools are still the same... like Duke and Purdue.
I'm rooting for St. Mary's... :)
Posted by: bou at March 22, 2010 05:27 AMBing Crosby graduated from Gonzaga. It is a Jesuit school like Holy Cross College where Bob Cousy and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas graduated. Holy Cross has won both the NCAA and NIT Tournaments in the past.. Xavier is also Jesuit.
Posted by: GG at March 22, 2010 08:37 AMLet's go Wildcats!!!
Posted by: Yabu at March 22, 2010 08:37 AMEvery year when March madness rolls around I have to look up Gonzaga and Xavier. I can never remember where they are.
Oh yeah... Go Purdue!
Posted by: Teresa at March 22, 2010 01:19 PMAnybody but Dook - jus' sayin'
Posted by: patti at March 22, 2010 02:40 PMAhhh! I knew Holy Cross was Jesuit. I had no idea that Gonzaga and Xavier were... although it does make sense about Xavier. Gonzaga sounds like a muppet.
Posted by: Bou at March 22, 2010 09:38 PMBou,
You know I don't follow sports much (*softly* especially football). But I am a bit of a basketball nut. Now, mind you, I haven't attended a game since I moved back to Indiana. But, I do love March Madness and the NCAA tournament.
This year I didn't fill out a bracket. Just didn't have the time. I'm so glad I didn't. There have been so many upsets. This way I can just enjoy the games for what they are.
I can't believe the Big 10 has 3 teams in the Sweet 16; unheard of...they always choke. Two teams from Indiana in it still; sweet. The Final Four is in Indianapolis this year. I'm gonna try to catch some of the excitement.
I know a lady who fills out her bracket by whose mascot could beat the other. Like The Fighting Irish could beat The Blue Jays. And she usually beat me in the brackets, knowing nothing about the teams. It used to just pizz me off.
btw, My cousin used to be the head coach of Gonzaga...before they started winning a lot.
Enjoy the tournament!
Posted by: Jerry in Indiana at March 22, 2010 09:56 PMEvery time I see Gonzaga, I think "gazonga", and I just have a hard time taking the school seriously.
But I suppose it's not as bad as Ball State.
Gonzaga is in Washington state. They seem to show up quite often, not for certain but they may be one of those automatic bids (winning their conference championship). Kansas screwed up my bracket. I figure if Duke loses to Baylor, then it's close to being the first time a No. 1 Seed hasn't been in the final four. Here is a first in tourney history: Duke - Baylor matchup in Elite 8 in both the Men's & Women's Tournament.
