Busy, busy, busy. I have a freshman not afraid to ask for help, which is GREAT, but I find that I may be trying to help him pass the most jacked up high school English class in America as we try to decipher the difference between paraphrasing and summarizing.

We've been having in depth book discussions and character analysis of various books he was required to read. Boggling my mind it is, as I never had this type of English in high school. I'm not sure I had it in college.

I'm off to watch the Gator game, but I leave you with this interesting and amusing article. This is courtesy of my reader Cin, who emailed me the link.

In particular, you Southerners in 'cane country will be the most interested. I give you... the Waffle House Index.

I've heard Craig Fugate say it at the EOC in Tallahassee. When you think about what the people quoted in the article say, it makes sense. A little piece of normal in the midst of horrible makes life a bit easier to deal with.

Waffle House is the best idea for a restaurant ever. As that famous donkey once said "Everybody Loves Waffles". The only bad thing is that there are no Waffle Houses west of Arizona and north of Nebraska. What do we have to do to get a Waffle House? Have a hurricane up here in the Pacific NW?

That waffle house is less than an hour drive from where I spent the Hurricane.
Waffle house was our savior when I drove a limo part time. It was the only thing open at 3am.

what has 4 breasts and 18 teeth?
The night crew at waffle house!

K-Nine: That sounds like the bar across from my old newspaper. It had a two-tooth minimum.

So how come no mention about someone's birthday?

I know its raining on the panhandle, but come on.

We love the Waffle House! And we don't have one down here. Here we are in the middle of Hurricane Country and we don't have a Waffle House.

And they aren't making money on it. It's a feel good thing.

Thomas- I just hadn't gotten to it!

Summarizing- putting the main ideas (a broad overview) 'in your own words'

Paraphrasing- using a passage from the original source and putting it in your own words. With accreditation. Paraphrasing is longer than summarizing, and uses a broader segment of the original.

Technically, both a summary and a paraphrase should have the original source attributed. But it is not always so.
The reason for either is to show support (evidence) for your own claim (writing).
