So.
We've had our FIRST cold front come through. I am wearing my muppet slippers and happy for it.
I think it was 45 degrees when I got up this morning. That was the outside temp. I got a txt from VW saying, 'Oh... the weather outside is frightful..." It is a cold blustery day.
I am happy.
However, this is where the fighting over control of the thermostat begins. I don't like to turn on the heat. I'm of the 'suck it up, put on more dang clothes' mentality.
Allow me to reiterate, Florida homes are built to expel the heat. They're made to keep cool. So when there is a cold snap, our cool homes get colder.
Ringo had to go to work this morning and Bones convinced me I should take him and Mr. T out for breakfast. While we were eating, I said to them, "You know, I should open the windows and let some fresh air in the house..."
The boys went stoically silent. Both stopped eating. Finally Bones said, "Mom... please... it is in the 40s outside! You can't open the windows!"
I replied cheerfully, "Oh, you'll be fine..."
To which Mr. T added, "Mom, seriously, no. Wait until it gets into the 60s..."
I figured they were just being cold weather chickens. I was all set to open the windows when I realized I was a bit chilly. I looked at the thermostat and it's 65 in the house.
My husband is going to have a FIT when he comes home. I can hear it now. It's supposed to get down to 35 tonight and HE is going to want to turn on the HEAT!
Which means... he'll turn it on before he goes to bed, and sometime in the middle of the night, I'll creep over to the thermostat and turn it off.
Sheesh.
Clothes. It does a body good...
Posted by Boudicca at January 3, 2012 12:53 PMGet heated mattress pads. Here in the Great White North (Michigan), you heat up the bed nice and cozy....turn it off and get in bed. It's wonderful, by the time it gets cool, you'll be asleep.
Posted by: Trudy at January 3, 2012 01:16 PMIt was 19F last night when I took the dog out for his walk, blowing too. No idea what the wind chill was.
Be glad for temps over 32F.
Posted by: The Thomas at January 3, 2012 01:34 PMI may have to look into a mattress warmer. It may stave off the marital strife!
I couldn't handle the temps you all speak of. 30+ degrees is about all I can take, with a preference of no rain or snow... thank.you.very.much.
Posted by: Bou at January 3, 2012 02:04 PMIn my part of the Great White North:
Record high/low for yesterday was 59F(2004)/-2F(2001), 2.7 inches of snow, winds 23 gusting to 32. Observed high/low was 30F/18F. Wind chill last night was probably around 8F. We had a cloudless sky, so it was COLD.
Record high/low for today was 59F(2004)/-11F(1902), trace of snow, winds 12 gusting to 24. Current temp 23F, but sunny.
Posted by: The Thomas at January 3, 2012 02:28 PMIt was 19 degrees here in Northern Illinois when I woke this morning. Windchill was (I think) 4 degrees.
I have our thermostat set at 65 and I refuse to make it warmer in the apartment.
Mostly because I don't want the extra cost of heating, but also because I have slippers and plenty of blankets in my living room (four of them, plus three more in the coffee table/trunk).
I don't think I'll be opening the windows any time soon, though. Snow or no, it's darn cold outside!
Posted by: Rave at January 3, 2012 05:12 PMwe just pulled all the plants inside.
Due to our chinchillas, we can never let it get above 80 in here.
Due to our hedgehogs, we can never let it get below 72 in here.
So... yes... our heat is churning in this cold weather! And our little hedgies want me to make it warmer.
Posted by: wRitErsbLock at January 3, 2012 05:17 PMI double checked last night's wind chill against the NWS formulae and it was either 0F or -2F depending on whether the wind was just blowing or gusting.
The dog had a better time this evening as the wind is down even if the sky is clear.
Posted by: The Thomas at January 3, 2012 09:41 PMOh the whining has started already. The house is 67, but my bedroom is probably about 64. My kids keep carrying on, my husband is getting grouchy. Inhumane has been muttered.
Please. Maybe they all need some super cool muppet slippers like I have. My feet are SWEATING. I feel GREAT!
Posted by: Bou at January 3, 2012 09:53 PMI'm with them. I hate the cold and we have thermostat wars in our house, too. Although, to give him his due, since we have gas forced heat, we keep the bedroom cooler by closing the vent and I think that has helped in keeping us healthier. Just sayin'.
Posted by: PeggyK at January 3, 2012 11:25 PMIt's about 5 degrees outside right now... I'm not feeling the whole more clothes thing... LOL! But I should sleep pretty well since I doubt I'll have any hot flashes ;-) BTW - down comforters are definitely the way to go when it's cold out. No wires necessary. Just put a light blanket over one of those puppies and you will be very warm all night. (layers in blanketry as well as clothes helps keep in the warm).
Posted by: Teresa at January 3, 2012 11:56 PMOr add the dogs and cats ala the Donovan Clan, warms you up the same way. Now Hunhead will want to buy a dog.
Its 61F by my computer, 20F outside with 9F windchill. No new snow ... yet.
Posted by: The Thomas at January 4, 2012 12:31 AMYou and my mom are just alike!
Posted by: vwbug at January 4, 2012 07:19 AMI don't mind the cold so much. I can wear extra clothes or turn on the heat if needed. But I sorta feel sorry for the critters at the zoo where I volunteer. The staff uses wind barriers and heat lamps to try to protect them, and the animals try to find sunny areas to warm up in.
Posted by: George P. at January 4, 2012 10:36 AMHouse thermostat is set at 65 degrees all winter, add 2 puppers and a nice fleece blanket while awake and a down blanket while asleep and that is all you need.
The heat produced by two small puppers is amazing.
It's been in the high 20's/low 30's all week, by weeks end though we are suppose to be in the 40's.
Posted by: Quality Weenie at January 4, 2012 12:19 PMPast two nights not far north of you...28. Tonight about the same and then slight warming.
Multiple layers and a heating pad in bed.
Is it Spring yet?
Posted by: Jean at January 4, 2012 01:08 PMMy husband and I agree about keeping warm...(although I do turn the thermostat lower for the front part of the house when we're not in there at night). Out of curiosity...how 'cool' do you keep it in the summer?
Posted by: Mrs. Who at January 4, 2012 06:12 PMHe won. We turned on the heat while we slept. He had it on 70... I dropped it to 69 when he fell asleep. He wants a thermostat in our room... he says it's a good 3-5 deg cooler in our bedroom.
In the summer... I keep it on 78. I have a programmable, and during the day while the house is empty, we keep it on 80. I struggle with giving money to the power company...
Posted by: Bou at January 4, 2012 10:48 PMIf I remember correctly, didn't someone's worm science project die because it was too cold in your house one winter? Check the temp for the boys' rooms.
Posted by: sticks at January 5, 2012 06:44 PMBoudicca, don't you remember the winters in Taiwan? Everyone had an electric blanket, and with no central heat you could see your breath when you exhaled. It was great sleeping weather.
And Sticks, those were roly poly bugs (pill bugs) Morrigan killed in her science project. It was so dry in that small glass tank that they dried up.
Posted by: Angus of Jura at January 5, 2012 09:35 PMDad- And we NEVER got sick. EVER. I think this whole central heat and air thing is not good.
And Sticks is right. T had a mealworm science project on a window sill and they froze. We thougth they were dead. Fortunately they were hibernating and the teacher brought them back to life...
Meal worms... the albino version of Roly Polys. We evidently don't have good luck with those things... eitehr we freeze them or starve them!
