Stories from the Halls of a Public Art School

Today Bones had late start. For high school here, instead of a half day where kids get out at noon, the high school starts at 11 or 12, depending on the school.

So today I drove him into school and as we got to the front of school, I saw a girl who was wearing black fishnet hose, black shorts, and she had pink hair.

PINK.

I call it Horton Hears a Who pink, like those fluffy pink trees from the Dr. Seuss book.

Said I, 'Oh. Look... she has pink hair...'

Said Bones, 'Yeah, she's a lesbian...'

To which I said nothing at first and then replied, "How do you know that?"

To which he replied, "Because I know her Mom. And, she's dating a girl whose hair is blue."

To which I said nothing at first and then replied, "Oh. Well then. There you go."

Good grief.

"Not that there's anything wrong with that..."

...because there really isn't.

Actually, the funny part to me was that one had pink hair and the other blue. I don't care if they're lesbians or what color their hair was. It was just funny that one definitively picked pink and one definitively picked blue. I thought that was a riot.

(The reason I asked him, "How do you know that?" is I was wondering if I was missing something. Do only lesbians at his school have pink hair? Is there some code?)

And as I was talking to one of the guys at work, the other thing that makes me laugh is this is all college stuff to me. This is how college kids are... or were. But at an art school... it's accepted to be you at a younger age.

It makes me laugh.

I wonder, sometimes, if there are really that many truly "gay" people, or if it's just a cry for attention. Especially among kids that age who are looking for a way to stand out from the crowd.

At that school, I think it's real because they don't stand out. Nobody cares or thinks anything of it. It's a really accepting bunch of kids.

I do wonder if it helps their success as a school. They are the 5th best school in the State and they accept kids strictly on audition. You could have failed nearly every class in 8th grade, failed the state test and if you were passed for 8th grade, and you nail the audition, you're in. It's what happens next that makes them the 5th best school.

I'm not sure it will work for Bones, but I'm hoping.

Meanwhile, I did ask him if he will be using his hair as a palette of self expression and he said, 'No... not even lime green, my favorite color'.

I loved having pink hair.
right now my hair is greenish blonde as the blue has nearly washed out and the bleached part is reappearing. I haven't decided if I'm adding more blue or dyeing it back to a normal color so I can start sending out resumes.

You ask "How do you know that?"

Its because Bones knows everyone and everything. You should be used to that by now.

As I told my children: tatoos are forever, but hair grows out so you can change it at your will.

Ha! It's a good question to ask how he knows. One can never assume how they come by information. Much better to know he's got it based on the fact that she has a girl friend rather than so-and-so told me (which might or might not be true).

I remember a guy in high school who I found very difficult to interact with (just on a friend basis). This was way back in the dark ages. At a reunion I found out he was gay. Had I known that back then, I would have been far far more comfortable dealing with him. It was like something wasn't quite right, but not being a mindreader or perceptive enough I couldn't place it. And since I always worry about saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, it made me uncomfortable. heh.
