Misty Brain

I picked Bones up from school today and we had this deep philosophical discussion and I remember thinking, "I need to post this... this is amazing..." and now I can't remember.

I'm so irritated.

So Bones has been trying to convince their vocal teacher that the basses should warm up to this song when they sing at Disney in December. Let me know if you're in the area... Epcot... Dec 21. I think 5 or 5:30.

So far she's not budging. She said no. So Bones may learn it on his own as his own warm up and if so... I may tape it and put it up. We'll see...

I frickin' wish I could remember the conversation... so mature and insightful.

So Bou, all I have found are the text of the song, not the notes or chords. Has Bones found that or is he just going to learn it by ear?

He's going to learn it by ear. That's how he originally learned music. His preference is to hear it once and then use music, but he's not going to be able to do that...

He's looking forward to the time he doesn't have to hear it first. I just asked him and he said he still struggles with oure sight reading

Brings to mind the "tests" we used to have in HS choir.

We were given page with several lines of notes (and flats/sharps) where each line was a different song.

We had to figure out the key signature, annotate the notes with each notes position in the key (1,2,..,7,1), and figure out what the song was.

There were several tricks to remember the jumps between notes besides the usual warmup 1-3-5-3-1 and 1-5-1 progressions. Since its been more than 40 years since I used them, I can no longer remember which standard childhood songs provided the best associations between numbers and intervals.

Bones can probably tell you what they are. I would be greatly surprised if his music teacher didn't use that sort of common association as an aide to memory.

Thinking again, I'll bet I have Tolkien's music for that song.

Somewhere in my basement among the LoTR books is a tabloid size book with the songs and music.

I tried last night and it wasn't in the first place I looked.

You have to have him look this up on YouTube: The Hobbit - Misty Mountains - Peter Hollens Acappella. He multi-tracks the entire piece himself. Amazing talent!

Thomas- He'll get there eventually. He didn't get music theory this year either because of that remedial math class he has, so he'll have it next year. But he's getting better about being able to actually sight read... I think it might be a confidence issue as well. His vocal class is teaching that now... although they are focusing this year on singing in Italian and some international phonics language or something so you can sing in different languages. I think next year is German.

V6- I saw that! We watched it together the other night. He is amazing!
