You say Tomato, He says Tumultuous

Bones has this thing about words. He always uses them incorrectly. Sometimes I think he does it on purpose now, but other times, I think it's the impulse.

This word pops into his head, so he uses it. The definition does not define the word. He thinks the word comes up with its own definition based on how it is used.

For example:

I worked until 7 tonight and my husband was out with the boys. So the four of them were trying to decide where I was going to meet them for dinner. My husband finally said, "Just throw some names of places out there and I'll tell you yes or no..."

Bones: Japanese.

Hunhead: No. We ate that recently.

T: Italian

Hunhead: Nah.

Bones: I know. If you're feeling ambidextrous, we could do PF Changs.

Silence was in the car until finally my eldest said, "Bones, if you're feeling like you can use both hands? Or... would that be... ambitious?"

Evidently there was a lot of laughter over it and it's now the family joke. If someone is being overly driven, they will now be ambidextrous.

My kids don't misuse real words, they mishear the pronunciation and create new words. Once one of the cats caught a rodent and let it loose in the house. Our middle son made the discovery: "MOM!!! The cat caught a ver!!!!

"A what?" (?!)

"A VERRRRRRR!!!!"

"WHAT???"

"You know, a VER!!!"

We finally got it sorted out and he now knows the creature was a "vole", but voles (and unidentified varmints as well) are now referred to as "vers" around our house. He hates it when we do that.

I would do something like that when I was reading, especially quickly or under stress (like out loud for the class). My eyes and mind would be working quickly, and ahead of my mouth/speech and if I came to a word that I did not know what it was my mind would just substitute a word that looked similar that it did know. I came up with some pretty spectacular stuff, if the rumors are true.

Made me think of the Will Ferrell meme "Sometimes I use big words I don't understand to make myself seem more photosynthesis" LOL.
