Spice, Not Just for the Kitchen Cabinets

I saw this thing on this drug called Spice while on FB. Some kid died taking it and suddenly I thought, "Wow, I should talk to my kids about this."

Right. I'm about two years behind on this parenting gig, it would appear. The following is a conversation I had, to the best of my recollection, with my eldest while we were out and about the other day.

Me: Hey, I want to talk to you about this drug called Spice.

Ringo: Yeah. That's some bad stuff.

Me: Oh, so you know about it!

Ringo: *blink*

Me: I'm glad! I read about some kid that died and I wanted to make sure you knew about it.

Ringo: Mom. This stuff was around when I was in HS. Going to a private school, all the kids at my school could afford real weed. The kids in the other schools were doing Spice. It was cheaper. They'd say, "It's like almost legal!" and I'd reply, "It's like being almost dead!" That's stuff is bad news. Nobody I know does it.

Me: Ok then. No worries.

Ringo: No. No worries.

I realized this week, the reason my boys don't smoke pot is because... it's smoking. I'm not going to sit here and say, 'Oh, not MY boys' or "they don't do drugs because I told them not to."

I heard them tonight while they were watching the news. Something came up about legalizing pot and I heard my eldest say, "Why do people want this legalized? It's STILL SMOKING. It is STILL putting something other than air in your lungs."

So in their mind, it's not the fact it's a mind altering substance, they just view it as a mind altering substance that can cause lung cancer and they don't see the point.

If that makes sense...

Nice. I'm pushing 50 and my number one reason for not smoking pot back in the day was "It makes my throat hurt because I don't smoke cigarettes and I'm not used to this". My number two reason was "I don't get it, what's the big deal, why would you want to be so out of it?" So I can relate.

I never smoked pot because I want my wits about me. I'm barely able to manage it without drugs!

Our kids just don't seem to be curious. Our daughter had her car totaled by a woman who was driving while high. Fortunately, she escaped major injury. However, she was upset by the fact that the woman had a two-year-old unrestrained in the car. The police handcuffed the woman and child protective services took the baby. It was a sad lesson, but it could have been much worse!

My sisters and I (all now in our 40s) always tease my Mum about how she *ruined* our teen/young adult years by making us the carers and voices of reason for our friends with drugs and alcohol. After being a nurse all her life we'd just heard too many stories about people leaving their friends in guest rooms/cars/bathrooms and having them choke on their own vomit to ever leave a drunk friend alone or try and stop a friend writing themselves off. Likewise she was very big about sharing the "unknowns" in drugs ie: drugs cut with washing powder, hidden chemicals, pot laced with other additives etc so we were too scared to try anything and ensured we indoctrinated our friends with the same views. In reality of course we're grateful for it but we love to needle her about making us all "wowsers". :-)

Being open with your kids is the only way to go. x

It has been awhile.

My little sister just finished 15 hours of surgery yesterday for breast cancer surgery. NOBODY blames that on her.

Why is that? She never took so much as a drag.
